The method involves determining a combined voltage of off-state transient voltages that are generated between input and output terminals of the inverter switches. The method then compares the combined voltage with a voltage limit and altering the states of the switches for greater combined voltage by employing pulse width modulation control. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for controlling a brushless motor.
