A security engine within a radio telephone hand set has in a re-programmable write only memory secret numbers derived from and corresponding to the public values entered into the telephone for specified network use. A challenge issued under the control of a timer causes an output from the CPU to be checked against the secret numbers via an interface register. The arrangement provides protection against unauthorized use or cloning of the hand set. |
