The appts. (1) for determining the composition of pourable materials (4), such as sand, within a rotating feed-drum (3), includes a box (2) mounted on the underside. This holds three parallel measuring plates connected via a shaft to an electronic read-out and to the poles of a measuring probe (7) using alternating current with changeable frequency. Pipes (9,10,11) connect the box to a cylinder (13) containing compressed air or other gas. A control valve (12) on the cylinder outlet regulates the flow of the compressed air to the box at time intervals. The process involves opening the valve to blast compressed air through the box in response to a build-up of material in the box back into the feed pipe (3) at regular intervals. This empties the box, after which the valve is closed and the procedure is repeated as necessary.
