Coating compsn., esp. for producing the base coat of a 2-layer lacquer system of the base coat/clear coat type, contains organic diluent, synthetic resin(s) (I) contg. urethane and urea gps., opt. other synthetic resins, pigments (III) and the usual additives; and (I) are new resins, which are obtd. by prepg. an NCO-prepolymer (IV) from a cpd. (V) with 2 NCO-reactive OH gps. and an aliphatic and/or cycloaliphatic diisocyanate (VI) and (partly) reacting (V) with an adduct (VII) contg. at least one active amino H atom, prepd. from a (meth)acrylate ester, pref. acrylate ester, and an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic cpd. contg. at least 2 amino H atoms. A multilayer protective and/or decorative coating is produced on a substrate surface by applying: (1) a base coat of the above compsn., which forms a polymer film on the surface, and (2) a suitable clear top coat compsn. and then (3) baking the two coats together. (V) is a polyester diol with Mn = 400-2000, prepd. from isophthalic acid. The (V):(VI) molar ratio = 0.5-0.9:1.0. (VII) contains an average of ca. 2 active amino H atoms/mol. (III) are metallic flake pigments.
