In a system and method for controlling access to an electronic data system, either of first and second portable electronic data recording means (23, 25) may contain recorded information. A user is only allowed access to the recorded information in at least one, when both have been detected by a reading device (13, 15, 19 21). The first data recording means provides prompts for data input and receives data in response to the prompts. The second data recording means records the same data as the first. The data from the first data recording means (23) is pre-processed by a pro-processor (33) and then finally processed by a processor (35).
