Process for the polymerisation of primary acrylates and optionally of vinyl comonomers by means of at least one initiator of formula R-M I in which M denotes a metal chosen from among the alkali metals and alkaline earth metals and R denotes a straight-chain or branched alkyl radical containing 2 to 6 carbon atoms or an aryl radical or aralkyl radical, in the presence of a macrocyclic complexing agent. The latter is 1,10-diaza-4,7,13,16,21,24-hexaoxa-bicyclo[8,8,8]hexacosane and the initiator is chosen from among diphenylmethyl-potassium and 1,4-disodio-1,1,4,4-tetraphenylbutane. Application of the process to the preparation of primary polyacrylates in high yields.
