The subject matter relates to an apparatus for monitoring the temperature of electrically operated apparatuses which are operated in continuous operation or in the standby mode. In order to prevent a fire breaking out as a result of excessive heat development in the apparatus, the monitoring apparatus which is proposed here is intended to interrupt the power supply to an electrically operated apparatus which is to be monitored. To this end, the monitoring apparatus comprises an apparatus part for holding control devices, on which an input terminal for the connection of the supply voltage and an output terminal for the connection of the load which is to be monitored are arranged, as well as a temperature sensor device which is arranged permanently connected to the apparatus part and a switch for bringing the apparatus into operation. In order to prevent faulty monitoring apparatuses being used for the monitoring tasks themselves, said monitoring apparatus can be checked by the user before use with respect to its serviceability for monitoring. This is achieved in a simple manner by the switch being constructed as a two-pole push-button switch (9) which is connected at its pole on the supply voltage side via a resistor (12) and, at its other pole on the supply voltage side via a resistor which is constructed as a PTC thermistor (13) to the input terminal (2). <IMAGE>
