The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for detecting an impact sound and the rhythm of the impact sound, and to a controlling operation of peripheral devices in accordance with the detected rhythm of the impact sound. The apparatus and method of the present invention comprise detecting an impact sound wherein the peak value of the sound inputted through a microphone is higher than a reference value (i.e., a threshold value), detecting the rhythm of the impact sound, and outputting a preset signal (or a control signal) corresponding to the rhythm, enabling the selective control of at least one of a plurality of peripheral devices.
