To release the brake, which is preloaded into the braking position by means of a preloading spring 44, a coil 27 is provided and is arranged in a homogeneous magnetic field of a permanent magnet 21. For continuously variable regulation of the braking force from full braking to no braking, the current intensity of the current fed to the coil 27 can be varied. The variation in the deflection of the coil 27 or deflection force is thereby produced and, if required, this is transmitted to an axially displaceable pressure plate 17 by way of a lever arrangement 32 and counteracts the preloading force. <IMAGE>
