To use the waste gas heat of a heating installation, the waste gas is cooled down by heat exchange with cold fresh air until condensate is formed. The heat of the greatly heated fresh air is used in heat exchange or by direct feeding in inside the heating installation, and also for preheating the combustion air and for reheating the waste gas for the purpose of protecting the chimney. The acid condensate is made alkaline and serves as washing water for treating the cooled waste gas in order to retain from the waste gas the harmful substances, in particular SO2, not removed by condensation, the condensate being neutralised.
