PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound useful as an intermediate of pharmaceuticals, perfumes and seasonings, economically, by reacting 3-methylcycloalkenone with oxygen in the presence of a salt of a metal selected from iron, ruthenium, rhodium and cobalt. CONSTITUTION:3-Formylcycloalkenone of formula II (Y is saturated or unsaturated straight- or branched-chain hydrocarbon group) is prepared as a main product, easily in one step, by reacting the 3-methylcycloalkenone of formulaI with oxygen preferably in a solvent at room temperature -100 deg.C in the presence of salts of one or more metals selected from iron, ruthenium, rhodium and cobalt, e.g. trivalent iron salt such as ferric chloride, ruthenium (III) halide such as ruthenium trichlororide, rhodium (III) halide such as rhodium trichloride, and cobalt (II) salt such as cobalt chloride. |
