PURPOSE:To efficiently activate a nonplatinum type electrode catalyst such as that for methanol fuel cell by heating tungsten, molybdenum carbide in an atmosphere of oxygen, hydrogen, and bringing it into contact with water. CONSTITUTION:A pellet of tungsten and/or molybdenum carbide is heated in an atmosphere of oxygen, hydrogen, or nitrogen. Then, it is brought into contact with water of room temperature to obtain an activated electrode catalyst. This treatment provides economically a nonplatinum type electrode catalyst having excellent catalytic action. |
