TITANIUM DIOXIDE CERAMIC COMPOSITION AND HOT-PRESSING METHOD FOR PRODUCING SAME

A polycrystalline ceramic body of rutile (TiO2) has been produced which has a density of at least 4.23 grams per cubic centimeter (99.5 percent of theoretical density) and an electrical quality factor of at least 10,000 at frequencies in the gigaHertz range. The body is produced by hot pressing TiO2 under reducing conditions, the TiO2 containing minor amounts of certain trivalent cations such as Fe3<+>, followed by heating in oxygen and slow cooling. Applications include use as a dielectric resonator in microwave filters.
